DALE FREDERICK HYLAN, 65 WINTER HAVEN- Dale Hylan, 65, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2014, following a valiant but short fight with lung cancer. Dale was born in Cleveland, Ohio and came to this area in 1970. He had served as a machine gunner in the Marines in Vietnam. He was employed by Polk County as a deputy sheriff detective for nine years, later working at ComCar and then LinCare. Dale is preceded in death by his mother Kay Dismuke, father Fred Hylan, daughter Lori Hylan Augustin. He is survived by his ex-wife and friend Jenny Hylan, son Brian Hylan, sister Patty Hylan, brother Robert Dismuke, two granddaughters, a great-granddau ghter, and Rocky. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

JEANNE EISSMAN, 78 MULBERRY- Mrs. Jeanne Eissman, 78, of Mulberry, Florida died peacefully at her home on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 due to complications of cancer. Jeanne was born February 24, 1936, in Goshen, Indiana to Weddell and Dorothy Berkey. A consummate mother and homemaker, she enjoyed traveling, cooking, being with her extended family, and especially loved watching wildlife. She graduated from the Gulf Port College with honors and also attended the University of Colorado, Boulder. Sailing and sailing instruction was her passion. She was also an avid water skier and instructor and performed acrobatic shows at many locations. In Boulder, she married John Brokaw with whom she had four surviving children; Tom, Todd and David Brokaw, and Lisa Staley; 9 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren. Later, she married her long time friend, Dr Robert Eissman, who preceded her in death May 18, 2010 in Lakeland, Florida. Chris and Todd Eissman, and Kathy Cowart are her surviving stepchildren. A private memorial service for immediate family members will be later this year. In lieu of flowers, donations made to any wildlife or nature preservation society would be an appropriate and appreciated way to celebrate her love of the out of doors.

CYNTHIA BROWN, 84 HAINES CITY- Cynthia Brown, 84, passed away in Haines City, FL on May 30, 2014 due to congestive heart failure. She was born in Louisville, KY. She was a member of St. Johns United Methodist Church in Winter Haven and a member of The Friendship Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. H.W. Brown. She is survived by her children, Stephen Brown and Jennifer Stewart, a sister, Alice Youngblood, three grandchildren, Sara, Ryan, and Bradley, and a great grandson, Ethan. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 5th, at 1 pm, at Ott-Laughlin Funeral Home in Auburndale, FL.

DR. HENRY GIDDENS, 91 TREASURE ISLAND- King, Dr. Henry Giddens, 91, of Treasure Island passed away May 30, 2014. Born in Tampa on October 15, 1922, he was the son of Estelle Jones King and Jetton King. Grandson of Mary (Minnie) Graham Jones, Columbus Jones, Nancy Turner King, and Thomas Moore King and great grandson of James Whitfield Graham and James Moore King. Dr. King graduate from Hillsborough High school in June of 1940 and subsequently attended the University of Florida for his pre-dental education. While at the University, he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He graduated from Emory Univers ity School of Dentistry with a D.D.S. Degree in 1946 and was elected to the Honorary Dental Scholastic Fraternity OKU. Following two years as a volunteer dental officer in the US Navy from 1946-1948. He was admitted to the Northwestern University Orthodo ntic Graduate School and completed his orthodontic training with a MSD Degree in 1950. He subsequently served two additional years in the navy aboard the USS Philippine Sea with the Seventh Fleet during the Korean War in 1950-1952. He practiced orthodont ics in Lakeland with an office also in Winter Haven and served as president of the Polk County Dental Association. He was a life member of the American Dental, Florida Dental, American Orthodontic, and the Southern Society of Orthodontics Associations. He married Patricia Ann Bowden on February 28, 1957 in Lakeland and is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years. Survivors also include his three children, James Edward King, Patricia Idelle King Sieg, and David Moore King; and three grandchildren, Keen an King Sieg, Ashley Ann Sieg, and David Giddens Sieg. Dr. King retired from orthodontic practice in 1973 and purchased the Thunderbird Beach Resort on Treasure Island which continues to be a family business operated by his son, David. He was previously a member of the Lakeland Yacht Club, Lakeland Rotary C lub, and the Tampa Yacht Club. He was also a member of the Rotary Club of Grand Cayman where he and Patsye resided in that beautiful British Crown Colony from 1995-2004. He was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Tampa FL. A graveside service will be held at 11am on Tuesday, June 3 at Myrtle Hill Memorial Park in Tampa.

CAROLYN SIMMONS SWARTZ, 67 AUBURNDALE- Ms. Carolyn Simmons Swartz, age 67, passed away Tues. May 27, 2014 at Lakeland Regional due to Respiratory Failure. Ms. Swartz was born April 3, 1947 in Elba, AL. to Dock and Maggie Grace (Cole) Simmons. She was a longtime Auburndale resident and member of Deliverance Center Church in Auburndale. Carolyn enjoyed traveling, church, reading her Bible and socializing with friends & family. She was preceded in death by her parents and 3 brothers. Carolyn is survived by her loving family; 3 Daughters: Toronda (Kenneth) Branch of Winter Haven, Marie (Tony) Vanpool of Lake Alfred Saundee Sheffield of Plant City, 3 Brothers: Jerry Simmons of Auburndale, Donald (Cindy) Osbon of Lake Wales, Johnny (Li bby) Osbon of AL. 6 Grandchildren: Christa, Shanda, Kayla, Karissa, Jimmy & Jordan. WILLIAM ANDREW LANG, 82 LAKELAND - William A. "Bill" Lang, 82, of Lakeland passed away on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, 2014, of complications from a fall. Bill's wife of 61 years, Eleanor, passed away recently, in January. Bill was born in Lakeland to George and Jewell Lang; and was a graduate of Kathleen High School. He served in the US Navy, along with Eleanor, from 1952-1954 in both California and Korea. Bill married Eleanor in 1953, and after leaving the Navy, and a b rief stint in Eleanor's home state of Maine, they moved to Lakeland. He worked his entire career at General Telephone, starting as a line-man and working his way to upper Management before retiring from GTE. For many years, Bill was an active Volunteer/C oach with the East Lakeland Baseball League, the North Lakeland Volunteers Football League, a member of the Lakeland Optimist Club, mentoring high school students in Junior Achievement, the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, gol f, coin collecting, antiquing with Eleanor and cheering on his beloved Florida Gators, Tampa Bay Bucs and Tampa Bay Rays. But the most enjoyable hobby Bill had, later in life, was cheering for his 24 grandchildren and great grandchildren's sporting events! He was also an avid supporter and advocate of the Florida Baptist Children's Home! As aforementioned, Bill was preceded in death recently by his wife Eleanor; his parents George and Jewel Lang and sister Vivian Lang Thomas. He is survived by his daughter Cathy Lang Williams (Ted) of Lakeland, FL, sons Steve (Beth) of Alpharetta, GA, D avid (Carry) of Orlando, FL, Jeff (Darla) of Lakeland, FL and Matt (Stacy) of Gainesville, FL., eleven grandchildren, Jennifer Gay More, Allison Gay Sullivan, Julie Gay Mayo, Brant Lang, Janna Lang Lampton, Natalie Lang Brown, Chandler Lang, Camden Lang, Makena Lang, Kristi Williams Dennis and Tricia Williams Boyd; nephews Richard Thomas and Frank Thomas and niece Debbie Thomas Shiver. Bill also was blessed with thirteen great grandchildren! A private ceremony, with the family, will be held at Florida National Cemetery on Monday, June 2, 2014. A celebration of Bill's life will be held during mid-Summer and information will be forthcoming! Born March 10, 1955 in Bartow, FL, Ms. Bryan was a longtime resident of Bartow before moving to Lakeland. She was a purchasing clerk specialist for the Polk County School Board, serving with the school system for over 38 years. Ms. Bryan is preceded in death by her parents: Cecil & Sybil Wilkes and a brother Therman Wilkes. MELBA B. GRAY, 85 Publix Supermarkets, Inc. LAKELAND - Melba B. Gray of Lakeland, FL, passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at home due to cancer surrounded by her family. She was 85. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Edward Gray, Sr., brother, Robert Van Barwick, Jr. and her sister, Sarah Dockery. She is survived by her son, Donald E. Gray, Jr. (Shirley), daughters, Denise A. Howard (Thomas) and Sharon K. Vaughn (Roy) , all of Lakeland, FL, 6 grandchildren: Aaron Gray, Amanda Carr, Keith Vaughn, Brett Vaughn, Michelle Vaughn and Paul Buffington and 7 great grandchildren. Born January 12, 1929 to Robert Van and Mary Bates Barwick, she was a lifelong resident of Lakeland, FL and retired from Publix Supermarkets, Inc. Mrs. Gray enjoyed working in her garden and took pride in always having a well manicured lawn. Above all, she was a devoted mother and grandmother to her children and grandchildren. HENRY ROBERT WARNOCK, 81 LAKELAND- Henry Robert Warnock, 81, died of heart failure on May 31, 2014. Born in Yonkers, N.Y. on December 20,1932 to George and Gertrude Warnock. He was an employee of Gristede Brothers for many years. A member of Sacred Heart Church, he sang in the choir for 32 years. He was also an active volunteer for many years for North Yonkers Boys Club and Special Olympics. He helped to start the first Boy Scout troop in New York State for special needs individ uals. He devoted a great deal of time as a parent advocate for special needs students through Yonkers N.Y. School board. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Joan Frances Warnock (Cowan), children; Colleen McCarthy and William (Bill) Lakeland, Eileen Castellano (Tom) Dover Plains, N.Y. and Henry (Peggy) Yonkers, N.Y. He also had four grandchildren Bryan (Megan), Kevin, Jamie (Tim) from N.Y. Erin of Lakeland. One great granddaughter McKenzie Warnock of Chappequa N.Y. He retired to Lakeland in 1997 and attended St. Joseph's Church. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph's Church 210 West Lemon St., Lakeland on Tuesday June 3, 2014 at 9am. STANLEY LEON RENFROE, 90 Frito Lay North America, Inc. LAKELAND - Stanley Leon Renfroe, 90, passed away Saturday, May 31, 2014, as a result of natural causes. Mr. Renfroe was born April 6, 1924 in Lumber City, GA. He and his family moved to Lakeland in 1947. Mr. Renfroe was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army where he served in the Philippines during World War II. He was an employee of F rito Lay for 32 years and served as a district manager. Mr. Renfroe is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Evelyn Renfroe; daughter Barbie Clements and her husband, Jeff; son Daniel Renfroe; brothers A.G. Renfroe and his wife, Jeanette and Lawrence Renfroe and his wife, Doris; granddaughter Ashley Veil lon and her husband, Koby; grandson David Clements and his wife, April; great granddaughters Selah and Olivia Clements; and great grandson, Jacob Veillon. Born May 3, 1954 in Bartow, Bruce was the son of the late Harold Horn and Louise Smith. Bruce was an Air Force veteran serving in Desert Storm in Iraq. He also worked for Mosaic for 20 years and was currently an Electrician and Instrument Technician. Mr . Horn was a longtime member of the Bartow Church of God and formerly had served as a minister of music. He is survived by a loving family that includes his wife of 23 years, Penny Horn of Bartow, daughters: Michelle Mincey (Christopher) of Winter Haven, Kelly Dumire (Bruce) of Bartow, mother Louise Smith (Q.D.) of Bartow, brother Randy Horn (Dawn) of Polk City, step brother Dwayne Smith (Allison) of Bartow, and two grandchildren: Klayton and Brandon Dumire. ALICE ANN COOK, 92 Bell System CARROLLTON, GA. - Alice Ann Cook, age 92, of Carrollton, formerly of Lakeland, Florida, passed away on Sunday, June 1, 2014, of natural causes. She was born on Feb 12, 1922 in Terril, Iowa to the late Christian Peder Bendixen and Bessie Mae Bendixen. She retired from Bell System in San Rafael, California as an operator in the telephone communications industry. She was a high school graduate in Esterville, Iowa, and was Baptist by faith. She loved dancing especially ballroom dancing, and was still teaching the Electric Slide even while on her walker. She is survived by her sister, Carol E. Doxey of Carrollton; sister, Jean Thorson of Lakeland; and several nieces and nephews. In keeping with the family's wishes, the body will be cremated and there are no services scheduled at this time. Ernest was born September 23, 1920, in Lakeland, Florida to John & Dora Purvis and has been a lifelong resident. He was a retired railroad engineer. McGUIRE, 88 PORT ORANGE - Elisa McGuire, age 88, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, May 25, 2014 at Port Orange Nursing & Rehab in Florida, due to natural causes. Mrs. McGuire was a homemaker and worked for the Michigan State Police, as a bookkeeper for Michigan Retailers Assn, and the YWCA in Lansing, Michigan, from which she retired in 1987. She was born in Owosso, Michigan, August 7, 1925, the daughter of Louis and Bertha (Schmiege) Bandkau. A graduate of Owosso High School, she earned an Associate's Degree in Business from Ferris State University and also attended Michigan State University. She and Wayne E. McGuire "Mick" were married on October 30, 1949 at Salem Lutheran Church in Owosso, Michigan. A resident of Lansing most of her life, she later moved to Lakeland, Florida in 1990 before moving to Port Orange in 2002. Mrs. McGuire was a member of the American Business Women's Association and was a long-time member of Emmanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lansing, serving as President of the Women's Missionary Society for two terms. She later served as a member of t he Guild at Our Savior's Lutheran in Lakeland and was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran in Port Orange. She loved spending time with her family and friends and demonstrated loving care to all. She was a talented seamstress and was known for the beautiful sweaters, afghans, quilts and craft items she created. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Lenora Newton (Bandkau) and her son-in-law, Joseph Gambardella. Survivors include her daughter, Beth Ann Gambardella (McGuire) of Redwood City, California; her son and daughter-in-law, Scott A. and Colette B. McGuire of Port Orange; six grandchildren, Shannon Fischer of San Francisco, California, Kelly Bernal (Fisch er) of San Carlos, California, Megan McGuire of Orlando, Florida, Caitlin McGuire of Port Orange, Cameron McGuire of Port Orange, and Ian McGuire of Port Orange; and one great grandson, Caden Bernal; also two nieces, Gretchen Taute (Irwin) of New Mexico and Louann Pelton (Irwin) of Michigan and one nephew, Glenn Irwin of Florida.
